According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 10 million people are diagnosed with cancer every year and it is estimated that there will be 15 million new cases every year by 2020. Globally, cancer is one of the leading causes of mortality, and the incidence of some types of the disease is rising within the Middle East. Data from the WHO suggests that Middle Eastern nations are within the group of countries likely to suffer most from complications associated with cancer in the coming decade.
For the first time, experts from the Middle East and Utah will gather in a one day conference to compare and study data and research about incidence of cancer in the Middle East and Utah. After a presentation on the Middle East Cancer Consortium (MECC), other experts will present papers on incidence of cancer in some Middle Eastern countries that point to unusual cancer patterns in the region. Utah experts will discuss the high value of cancer registry for estimating the cancer burden, identifying trends, and delivering treatment.
Speakers at this conference will include:
Dr. Joe Harford, Director of International Affairs’ department, National Cancer Institute
Dr. Michel Daher, President, Lebanese Cancer Association
Dr. Hasan Shanawani, expert on Islamic medical ethics and research
Dr. Hany Hussein, Director-General, Children's Cancer Hospital, Cairo, Egypt
The conference provides a unique opportunity to learn more about incidence of cancer in the Middle East, as well as the value of high quality population-based registries that may provide us with a better understanding of causes of and cures for cancer. This conference is open to the public.
