Antoinette "Nan" Stroup, PhD, is the deputy director of the Utah Cancer Registry (UCR) and a research assistant professor of the Division of Clinical Epidemiology, Department of Internal Medicine, at the University of Utah. She is also a member of the Cancer Control and Population Sciences Program.
The UCR is a population-based cancer database and tracking system for the state of Utah that began in 1966; it became part of the National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program in 1973. The UCR serves as a data resource for investigators and facilitates scientific studies of cancer in collaboration with researchers nationally and at institutions across the state, including SEER, the University of Utah, Huntsman Cancer Institute, the Utah Department of Health (UDOH), and Intermountain Healthcare. In particular, the registry serves as a data resource for the Utah Population Database (UPDB), a genealogical database of families linked with medical information.
In addition to her role as SEER's co-principal investigator, Stroup is responsible for the research activities of the UCR, including oversight of the UCR's data release policies and procedures. Stroup serves on advisory committees that use UCR information and reviews all manuscripts and publications for confidentiality assurance and appropriate reference.
Stroup received her master of science degree in family ecology from the University of Utah and her doctoral degree in epidemiology from the University of California, Berkeley. Before joining the University of Utah, she worked as a statistical programmer and analyst for the Northern California Cancer Center.
